How the bulky rubbish collection service works:

You can order our bulky rubbish collection service for bulky rubbish, waste wood and waste electrical appliances.

The collection is carried out by three different vehicles, so please separate your items into the three categories when you put them out for collection.

If you wish to have your items collected, you must always register your request first:

• by telephone
• by fax
• with a registration card, obtainable from AWISTA GmbH recycling centres and depots, and from citizen registration offices;
• in person at the customer service centre
• or your simplest option, here online.

When you register your request, please tell us what items are to be collected. You will be informed of the collection date by phone or by post.

The free bulky rubbish collection service is only available to private households and only for volumes of up to two cubic metres. Charges and fees will apply for the collection of larger volumes, for deliveries to the Flingern recycling depot and for bulky rubbish collection from commercial premises.

What must you do?

On the day of collection, the registered bulky rubbish/waste wood/waste electrical appliances must be placed at pavement level within the boundaries of your own property, where it can be easily seen and easily accessed, no later than 06.00. If this is not possible, the rubbish should be put out on the street no earlier than 20.00 the previous evening in a place where it does not unduly obstruct traffic or pedestrians.

The owner of the rubbish is responsible for the condition of the bulky rubbish (so that it poses no danger to traffic and removal is not unduly difficult or time-consuming) until such time as it is collected.

What constitutes ‘bulky rubbish’?

Bulky rubbish includes:

bulky household items such as:

• child car seats
• brooms, bedsteads, pictures/picture frames, ironing boards
• buckets
• bicycles, baskets, flooring coverings (rolled up)
• wardrobes, garden implements, garden furniture, barbeques
• hand lawn mowers, wooden boxes (empty), dog baskets
• cellar shelving, pedal cars, children’s scooters, bulky children’s toys, prams, boxes (empty), clothes racks, small animal cages, suitcases,
• lamp shades, slatted bed bases, ladders, loungers, reclining garden chairs, linoleum floor covering (rolled up)
• mattresses, furniture
• stoves (no night storage heaters)
• upholstered furniture, projection screens
• book cases, roller blinds
• sandpits (taken apart), shovels, skates, cupboards, wheel barrows, armchairs, skis, sofas, sink tops, mirrors, chairs
• tennis rackets, carpets and rugs (rolled), animal cages, tables, table tennis tables
• bird cages
• washing baskets, rotary clothes driers, clothes horses
• tents

The following items are not classed as bulky rubbish:

• bulky items that will not fit into the rubbish collection truck because of their dimensions (larger than 1.40m x 2.00m ) or cannot be lifted by two people because of their weight
• household fittings such as wash basins, doors and windows
• building rubble and renovation waste
• night storage heaters containing asbestos and any other items or mineral wools containing asbestos

Collection of bulky electrical appliances and electronic equipment by the bulky rubbish collection service:

Electrical appliances and electronic equipment include:

• large electrical household appliances (e.g. cookers, dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators)
• bulky electronic home entertainment and IT equipment (e.g. television sets, computers, monitors)
• other bulky electrical household equipment (e.g. vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, rotary irons, radiators etc)
• bulky electrical tools and toys
• bulky electrical leisure and sports equipment

Collection of waste wood by the bulky rubbish collection service

In 2008, we began collecting waste wood separately from bulky rubbish and recycling it. Waste wood is collected from 06.00 onwards on bulky rubbish collection day by a separate vehicle and must therefore be put out separately from other bulky rubbish.

Waste wood includes:

furniture and other household fixtures made of wood, including items that have been varnished or plastic coated, e.g. cupboards, tables, benches, chairs, bedsteads, shelving

• without any large metal parts (e.g. metal chair legs)
• without mirrors or glass
• without upholstery

There are technical reasons for this. Waste wood and bulky electrical items are recycled and they are collected by different vehicles. On bulky rubbish collection day, three vehicles are used to collect the different categories of rubbish and these call at different times during the day.

House clearance and general waste removal service

In addition to its monthly bulky rubbish collection, AWISTA GmbH also offers a house clearance and general waste removal service within the city. Ask us – we will quote you a good price and solve your waste removal problem. To book our house clearance and/or general waste removal service, contact the bulky rubbish collection service by telephone.

The cost of removing your waste will be assessed on site by an AWISTA representative. It is calculated by the volume of waste to be removed and the time required.

The benefit to you is knowing in advance what the cost of your waste removal will be.

We will only remove items that fall within the definition of bulky rubbish.

Floor coverings glued to the floor will not be removed; electrical appliances and ovens must be disconnected by a professional electrician. Also not included in this service are contaminated items (e.g. night storage heaters) which need to be removed by a specialist company.
